Ελληνικό κείμενο (σύντομη περιγραφή)

Kαθοδήγησα την ανάπτυξη του ΕΘΝΙΚΟΥ ΔΙΚΤΥΟΥ ΕΡΕΥΝΑΣ “ΑΡΙΑΔΝΗ” (συνεχίζοντας στα 1987 το μίτο που ξεκίνησε το 1984 ο κ.Ν.Μαλαγαρδής-INRIA & ΒΝΙ), συμμετείχα στις πρώτες δράσεις της ΕΕ στην Ερευνα για τα Δίκτυα Πληροφοριών με την ιδιότητα του Εθνικού εκπροσώπου, σαν μέλος ομάδων εργασίας των: COSINE, RARE, EUROPANET, DANTE,  EBONE, CERN-CHEOPS που είχαν σημαντικό ρόλο στις εξελίξεις που έλαβαν χώρα στο παγκόσμιο δίκτυο, όπως η συμμετοχή μου στην επιτροπή συνένωσης του RIPE, οργανισμού συντονισμού του διαδικτύου στην Ευρώπη με τη κοινότητα RARE/COSINE και συν-ιδρυτής του πρώτου ελληνικού ISP.

Συμμετείχα σε τεχνολογικές δράσεις που οδήγησαν σε καινοτομίες στο δίκτυο όπως: Policy routing BGP4, εισαγωγή πολυμέσων MIME 1.0, network service ARCHIE, Networked Information Resources WWW, High Speed Internet.

Σχεδίασα τη μετάβαση του ΕΘΝΙΚΟΥ ΔΙΚΤΥΟΥ ΕΡΕΥΝΑΣ από τη στρατηγική OSI σε TCP/IP και δημιούργησα το πρώτο ανθρωπο-δίκτυο στελεχών στην χώρα στο πλαίσιο προγράμματος της ΕΕ (DGXIII) με κωδικό V.5805. Ημουν μέλος της ομάδας επιχειρησιακού σχεδιασμού της ΟΤΕ-ΝΕΤ,του πρώτου ISP πανελλαδικής εμβέλειας με άμμεση σύνδεση σε ΗΠΑ (MCI) και σχέδιο ΙΧ – Internet Exchange.

Συνέβαλα στη δημιουργία εργαστηρίων διαδικτύου(NOC) σε ΑΕΙ/ΤΕΙ μέσα από την καθοδήγηση φοιτητών για παραγωγή εκπαιδευτικού περιεχομένου και συμμετοχή στις τεχνολογικές εξελίξεις. Οι πρωτότυπες πτυχιακές εργασίες των φοιτητών αποτελούν τη δημόσια τεκμηρίωση της πορείας γνώσης που ακολούθησα μέσα από αυτή τη συνεργασία.

Συμμετείχα στην εκτέλεση ερευνητικών προγραμμάτων: VALUE II, ACTS, IST, TEN-TELECOM και στη συγγραφή των βιβλίων Internet: Getting started (1993)  το πρώτο με θέμα το διαδίκτυο διεθνώς και αργότερα το  βιβλίο KNOW YOUR ENEMY (2004) – συνεργαζόμενος με διεθνώς αναγνωρισμένους εμπειρογνώμονες με αντικείμενο την ασφάλεια στο διαδίκτυο με στόχο την ανάδειξη του προβλήματος (SECURITYFOCUS infocus list 2004).

Οργάνωσα το μοντέλο λειτουργίας/ανάπτυξης του campus δικτύου του ΔΗΜΟΚΡΙΤΟΥ και έβαλα τις βάσεις για ανάπτυξη R&D δραστηριοτήτων στο Ερευνητικό Κέντρο (κύριοι άξονες: σύσταση ΝΟC, διεθνείς συνδέσεις, ευρωπαϊκά προγράμματα ICT, φοιτητές ΤΕΙ, δορυφορικός σταθμός, τηλε-διάσκεψη, οπτική ευρυζωνική ΑΤΜ νησίδα, πολυμεσικό ταχυδρομείο, κόμβος ΕΔΕΤ, συνεργατικά εργαλεία-πόρταλ θεματικής πληροφορίας )

Ημουν μέλος επίσημων επιστημονικών ομάδων για την ανάπτυξη του ΕΔΕΤ, του εκπαιδευτικού λογισμικού, της Ευρυζωνικότητας, του Ελεύθερου/Ανοικτού Λογισμικού.

Επεξεργάζομαι ένα μοντέλο μάθησης με επιρροές από το λεγόμενο Ελεύθερο Λογισμικό (GNU) με στόχο τον μετασχηματισμό της τριτοβάθμιας σχολικής τάξης στη περιοχή των ΤΠΕ (Τεχνολογίες Πληροφορικής/Επικοινωνιών)

Εργάζομαι πάνω στην ιδέα εφαρμογής του πλαισίου εννοιών GENERAL SYSTEMS/CYBERNETICS σαν βάση μιας θεωρίας για την εξέλιξη του Διαδικτύου.

Παρακολουθώ το ερευνητικό θέμα Future Internet και ιδιαίτερα τα περί της Αρχιτεκτονικής του μελλοντικού Δικτύου.

My interest in Internet R&D resolves around a practical dimension as well a theoretical one where both dimensions feedback one another. Origins lie in the area of foundations of Computer Science with topics such as Lambda Calculus, Functional Programming and Implementation (the theme of my PhD research in early 80s) and in the field of Internetworking (being a pioneer of the Greek environment in 1986).

I am developing a Network Science “continuous course” under the influence of the above background trying to identify basic concepts that account for the emergence of the global Internet infrastructure (informally presented in the IT Conference, Ministry of Defense, Athens 1999, Informatics & Management Research)

Main features of the course (theory) are:

* An holistic approach to the Net
* An abstraction method over the technical development data
* A Model of Net evolution
* A Man-machine symbiosis framework
* A Correlation with real events and similar views
* Focus on Network architecture of Future Internet

I have coined the term “internet systematics” or “internet systemics” (see blog) to denote the above course,

which is closely related to the experience of developing research and commercial networks in Europe and in Greece, following events that marked the innovation path traced by the global community that include OSI vs IP, CISCO-IOS, RIPE, BGP4, EBONE, MIME 1.0, WWW, ATM, CIDR, IPv6, TISfirewall, CSCW, Honeynet Project, FOSS, OLPC.

Notable cases along the practical dimension are:

* Teaching UNIX internals of the first Computer Science Course in Greece (University of Patras 1984)

Hello,
This is the Institute of Informatics and <Telecommunication. I moved here in 2006 from another department of the Research Center that I joined in 1988 as the CTO of the National Research Network. Before that I was in the Ministry of Industry, Research and Technology since 1986. Before that, I worked at the Technical Institute of Athens and the University of Patras where I tought Programming C Pascal SASL and Unix. Next, I entered Networking with N.Malagardis (INRIA) in 1986, founder of COSINE and RARE. In 1988 I succeeded Nikos and help the National Research Network to survive its plan. I changed its orientation to TCP/IP, learning from the community process that established RIPE and DANTE. In 1992 I proposed to EU’s DGXIII and implemented a hybrid NRN (OSI + RFC987 gateways) plan for Greece. I created AS2546 on NSFNET with the help of resources from JANET (in particular Tony Bates of ULCC). Next, brought high speed (8 Mbps) to GreeK research community with the help of CERN’s CHEOPS under B.Carpenter’s visions. In general I followed and deployed locally Net advances (BGP4, MIME 1.0, ARCHIE, WWWtext, TISfw, Multicast, CSCW, MPLS, Honeynet) deploying CISCO+SUN+GNU technology and putting Universities on the Net assisted by student brainware. In 1995 I did e-commerse with SuperFast Ferries. In 1996-7 transfered know-how to OTE-NET (PTT’s ISP) and collaborated with GRNET (NRN 2nd generation in Greece) re-employed at NCSR Demokritos (Div of Applied Technologies) as a research officer (programmes ACTS, IST, TEN-telekom). My research background is programming language theory (Applicative or Functional Programming) kicked in so along with the practical aspects of Networking I have been pursuing Networking principles in order to develop a scientific understanding, I named this path initially “Net8 – network theory” and later “Internet Systematics” around 1999 where I put Internet under the “Macroscope” .
In 2002 I founded Internet Systematics lab to investigate security and free/open software. In 2002-2004 I was member of the National broadband Scientific commitee at the Ministry of Economy.

Other sites related to my doings are ARIADNE (in greek) the original name of the Greek National Research Network and ISLAB a security learning project based on FOSS. There is also a blog link just started about the learning path I have traced in ICT that helps me communicate my approach to ICT education influnced by Open-Source that I call “reflected learning”. This led me to join the campain for One Laptop Per Child Project in Greece. I have been a member of working groups and committees at national (GRNET, BROADBAND, OPENSOURCE) and international level (HONEYNET RESEARCH ALLIANCE, RIPE, DANTE, EBONE, RARE, COSINE).

Ηρθα στο Ινστιτούτο το διάστημα 1988 – 1994 μετά από απόφαση του Υπουργού κ. Πεπονή για μεταφορά του προγράμματος ‘Εθνικό Δίκτυο Ερευνας – ΑΡΙΑΔΝΗ’ από την έδρα του στην Αρχελάου 28 Παγκράτι στον ‘Δημόκριτο’ με διευθυντή του Ινστιτούτου τον κ.Χαλάτση.

Είμαι ξανά στο Ινστιτούτο Πληροφορικής και Τηλεπικοινωνιών το 2006 σαν υπεύθυνος του Εργαστηρίου Δικτύων, ήρθα από την Διεύθυνση Τεχνολογικών Εφαρμογών και Υποστήριξης Ερευνών που βρέθηκα τα έτη 1995-2005.

Το διάστημα 1986 – 1987 ήμουν στο Υπουργείο Βιομηχανίας (ΥΒΕΤ) στο πρόγραμμα ‘ΑΡΙΑΔΝΗ’ (Εθνικό Δίκτυο Ερευνας) που ξεκίνησε το 1984 από τον υπουργό κ. Λιάνη, με υπεύθυνο τον κ. Μαλαγαρδή από το Γαλλικό INRIA.
Το 1995 Ο Γενικός Γραμματέας Ερευνας (κ.N.Χριστοδουλάκης, καθηγητής ΟΠΑ) αποφάσισε νέα ονομασία ‘ΕΔΕΤ’ και νέο ανάδοχο οργανισμό το ΕΜΠ αντί των μέχρι τότε εμπλεκομένων ιδρυμάτων ΔΗΜΟΚΡΙΤΟΣ (DANTE, RARE, RIPE, CERN, EBONE) και ΙΤΕ (ΒΙΤΝΕΤ, EUNET, RIPE, EBONE). Σήμερα είμαι μέλος της Επιστημονικής Ομάδας του, μέλος του E-business Forum και μέλος της πρωτοβουλίας για το One Laptop Per Child. Εχω διδάξει στο Πανεπιστήμιο Πάτρας και στο ΤΕΙ Αθήνας. To διάστημα 2002-2004 διατέλεσα μέλος της Επιστημονικής Ομάδας του Υπουργείου Οικονομίας με αντικείμενο τη στρατηγική στην ευρυζωνικότητα.
